HPV: the whole story, warts and all

7pm – Carrickmacross Library

There has been much debate in the Irish media about the HPV vaccine recently.  Cervical cancer and some other forms of cancer

are caused by the Human Papilloma virus (HPV). Each year in Ireland, over 6,500 women need hospital treatment for pre cancer of the cervix, 300 women get cervical cancer, and 90 women die from it. HPV vaccination can prevent cervical and other cancers caused by this virus and is offered free of charge to all girls in their first year of secondary school.
Dr. Sinead Loughran from the School of Health and Science at Dundalk Institute of Technology has been researching Viruses and Cancer for many years and will cover the significance of HPV as a cause of cancer, how the vaccine protects against HPV and the facts about the safety of the vaccine being used in Irish schools.
