Ready for College - Aimed at promoting a college-going culture, and increasing the numbers who progress to third level, particularly in areas where that’s not usually the case, College Awareness Week is an important tool in spreading the word that having a post-secondary education plan is “both important and achievable”.

Steam Room

We have Ireland's first ever school STEAM room from Lacken NS. This is a room with no books or workbooks. Quality teaching and learning and is often pupil lead, using the most up to date technology and resources available. Come along to Johnston Central Library to explore and learn science technology engineering and maths in a new way.

Tales from Riverside Farm

Listen to the ‘Tales from Riverside Farm’ by author and AgriKids founder Alma Jordan in this fun and engaging farm safety workshop. From slurry to safety signs to finding out about animal behavior, Alma’s unique approach to creating awareness has continued to delight children all over Ireland.

Big Bear Planetarium

We are delighted to introduce our state-of-the-art mobile planetariums using Full dome 360-degree 3D digital projection technology, which have stunning graphics and advanced computer simulations. Come step inside the dome at Johnston Central Library, to discover the many fascinating facts about our Universe and learn from our fully qualified Astro Officers.

The Compass, the Map and Going on an Adventure

Have you always wanted to learn how to use that compass or how to interpret maps? Well here is a great opportunity to learn from an expert, who specialises in rural adventures – Marcus Magee will take you through the proper use of the compass and maps, and get you ready to head out in the beautiful landscape that is our country.

How Does Your Garden Grow

Tullyvin Garden Centre will provide workshops on botany and biodiversity including seed germination, how plants develop and grow. They will speak about the different bird species and the food and nuts appropriate for each species. Bird boxes and plants will be on display to foster an interest in wildlife.

Making Bird and Bat Boxes

Cavan Men’s Shed will be on hand to demonstrate bat and bird boxes made at their centre, they will discuss how to make your own bat or bird box, the timber required etc, and how to entice bats and birds to their new homes!!

bubblz maths

Caroline Ainslie AKA Bubblz the Mathematica Clown from Bubbly Maths, brings laughter and games to rich mathematical activities. Her shows have lots of audience interaction as they do lots of estimating and problem solving. The topics covered are shape, space, problem solving and mathematical thinking. All the activities involve either giant balloon shapes or soap bubbles.

Bones, Bones and More Bones!

Join Maeve McCormack, an Osteo-archaeologist to hear about her findings on various digs, how bones are dated along with reference to locations.

Drawdio Workshop

Come along to this very interesting series of workshops with Robbie Perry who has extensive experience on the construction of musical instruments and objects made from recycled materials, as well as on the design and construction of electronics for installations and musical instruments.

Science and the Circus

Dr. Ken takes you on a voyage of discovery investigating how performers make use of many scientific principles in their tricks and stunts. Find out why jugglers love gravity, how clowns use the force like a Jedi and why unicyclists need to keep moving to stay still. It’s science but not as you may know it!!!
